Mother's Day is a holiday celebrated worldwide to honor mothers and motherhood. The modern celebration of Mother's Day originated in the United States in the early 20th century, but the idea of honoring mothers dates back thousands of years.

The ancient Greeks and Romans held festivals to honor mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, while early Christians celebrated a festival known as Mothering Sunday.

In 1908, Anna Jarvis, an American activist, held a memorial for her mother and began campaigning for Mother's Day to be recognized as a national holiday in the US. It was eventually declared a national holiday in 1914 and soon spread to other countries around the world.

In India, Mother's Day was first celebrated in the early 20th century as a way to honor the contribution of mothers to society. The holiday gained popularity in the 1920s and 1930s and was officially recognized by the Indian government in 1949. Today, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May in India, just like in many other countries around the world.

Here Are Some of the Best Ways To Celebrate Mother’s Day 2023 in India

Best ways to celebrate Mother's Day in India

In my native country (Argentina) I grew up celebrating both mother's and father's days. Since it always fell on Sundays, it was the ideal day for my family to get together.

Since I was little, my father gave me money one or two days before Sunday to go buy a gift for my mother. Before we didn't have the option of shopping online, so I had to go store by store to find something that I knew she would like.

Before, it was customary to give mothers electrical appliances such as a microwave, but over time, that changed since the ideal is to give mom something for personal use. For this reason, when I grew up, I began to give her clothes, and my father bought her shoes and flowers. He took her out to dinner, just the two of them, as a date, and for lunch, my father always cooked a delicious menu for her and invited my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins and we all celebrated together.

Now that I'm away from home, I could see that contrast in India where I saw (this is a personal experience) that Mother's Day is usually one more day in many homes, and in others, they do have a family lunch even though it's the same mother the one who should cook for all the guests and that... in my opinion, should not happen.

Therefore, without wanting to impose anything on anyone, let's just think that mom is very important and is the one who carries one of the heaviest works: she is a mother, wife, and woman 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, 7 weekdays. Let's let Mom rest on this day and pamper her as she deserves, how? Next, I will leave you a list of ideas so that you can take into account what you can give to Mom on her day.

Prepare Breakfast for Mom

Preparing breakfast for Mom is a simple yet meaningful way to show your love and appreciation for all she does for you. It is a great opportunity to spend quality time together and create lasting memories. So why not surprise your mom with a delicious breakfast on her special day? She will surely appreciate the effort you put in and cherish the memory for years to come.

If you have small kids who of course, can’t make tea or coffee, then Dad should prepare breakfast for momsmiley

Here are some steps you can follow to prepare a delicious and healthy breakfast that your mom will love:

  1. Plan your menu: I was around 7 years old and my father used to tell me in advance about when it would be Mother’s Day so I could decide what to make for breakfast. You can choose from a variety of options such as pancakes, waffles, toast, eggs, or a breakfast sandwich. Make sure you select a menu that your mom will enjoy. I used to make toast with jam, butter, coffee with milk, and fresh orange fruit juice.

  1. Gather your ingredients: Once you have your menu planned, make a list of all the ingredients you will need so you can buy them one day before. This will ensure that you have everything you need before you begin cooking.

  1. Set the table: Take the time to set the table nicely. This will make the breakfast feel more special and show your mom that you put effort into preparing for her. Although I used to bring breakfast to her bed. Yes, I didn’t let her come out from bed, I used to feel so happy and proud of myself when preparing her breakfast and taking it to bed, and for it, my dad bought something like THIS

  1. Cook the meal: If you want to cook something more elaborate, follow the recipe instructions carefully and take your time to prepare the meal. Be sure to pay attention to the presentation and make the dish look as appetizing as possible.

  1. Serve breakfast: Once the meal is ready, bring it to the table and serve your mom. Make sure to pour her a cup of coffee or tea and offer to refill her glass as needed. She is the queen of the house!

  1. Clean up: After breakfast is over, help with the clean-up process. This will show your mom that you appreciate her and that you are willing to help out around the house.

Buy Her Flowers

flowers for mom

While I made breakfast for my mom, my dad brought flowers to her bed. He always gave her flowers on different occasions, including Mother's Day. He used to buy her a bouquet of beautiful red roses similar to THIS one but you can buy her your mother's favorite flowers. Where I come from, flowers are not only given on Valentine's Day.

Write Her a Heartfelt Letter

Another very nice detail that I'm sure your mom will love is reading a letter in your own handwriting dedicated to her. This was also part of my gifts, I made the cards myself, and inside, I wrote beautiful things and also drew pictures. She used to cry with happiness.

Make a Homemade Gift

A handmade gift is worth two. I also made gifts with my own hands like a jewelry box with ice cream sticks, very pretty decorated and painted. Also, when I grew up, I used to make her fabric wallets or fabric purses, she used to store and organize her things in them. You can do it too!

Plan a Special Outing

You can take Mom to some nice restaurant or maybe to the cinema, in my mom's case, my dad was the one who did this. He took her first to the movies and then to dinner, it was a very nice time for them to spend alone.

Organize a Family Gathering

As I told you before, my dad used to cook lunch cooking my mom’s favorite meal and a few days before, he would call the family on the phone to invite them to come home. Dad cooked lunch and I helped him in the kitchen, cleaned, and served guests, Mom just enjoyed chatting with others.

Take Her On a Picnic

If your mom enjoys being outdoors, there's nothing better than having a picnic. Our moms don't have much time to go on a picnic because they have to take care of us, you know, remember that this is her day and we have to take care of her. If she likes nature, take her to an open, green space so she can enjoy the view. Of course, you should not forget to prepare some food and drinks, something refreshing like fruit juices and sandwiches or the snacks that she likes the most.

Spend the Day with Her

Of course, you should spend the day with her, put the cell phone aside, and focus on spending quality time together. For example, she organizes board games, watches a movie at home, looks at that box with old photos, and asks her to tell you stories from her youth.

Treat Her to a Spa Day

This is a great gift for mom! You can also keep in mind that mom works a lot at home so relaxing in a spa can be great for her. In my case, my dad, instead of giving her a day of massages at the Spa, gave my mom an appointment at her favorite hairdresser because she liked (and likes) to always look good. She was (is) a natural blonde but she liked to change her hair color from time to time and she also did different hairstyles. Right there they also did her make-up and manicures. You can keep this pampering in mind for your mom too.

Tell Her How Much you Love Her

I always said it, Mother's (and Father's) Day is every day, and telling our mother how much we love her is an eternal gift. Say it daily but also, show it.
