In the previous blog, I told you about Durga Puja as the most important celebration in West Bengal. However, you will hear that in other parts of India, they talk about Navratri as the worship of the goddess Durga. As you can imagine, India is very diverse and if you are new to Hindu celebrations, here I will tell you the differences between Durga Puja and Navratri, but don’t worry, I will try to make it very simple and easy to understand.

While the northern and western regions of India observe Navratri, Durga Puja takes the spotlight in Bengal and other eastern states. These two celebrations, though seemingly similar, exhibit distinctive differences in religious customs and celebration styles:

 

  • In the northern and western parts of India, Navratri is celebrated by worshiping the nine forms of Goddess Durga over nine nights, culminating in the commemoration of Lord Rama's victory over Ravana during Dussehra. Conversely, Durga Puja rejoices in the triumph of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura.

 

  • Navratri initiates with the veneration of Shailputri, the first incarnation of Goddess Durga. In contrast, Durga Puja commences with Mahalaya, marking the commencement of the battle between Durga and Mahishasura.

 

  • Navratri concludes with the ritual burning of the effigies of Raavan on Dussehra. In contrast, Durga Puja culminates with Sindoor Khela, where married women playfully apply vermilion to each other before the immersion of idols.

  • During Navratri, devotees worship the nine avatars or forms of the Goddess Durga, one per night meanwhile during Durga Puja in West Bengal, maa Durga is represented with all her children, that’s why, in those temporary pandals, you will see the Goddess Durga in the middle killing the buffalo head demon, along with Ganesh, Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Kartik.

 

  • Both Navratri and Durga Puja center around the reverence of Goddess Durga, symbolizing the feminine power and the victory of good over evil.
